  “The man sang your praises. Yuri doesn’t do that often, so it made an impression with Leticia.” Paul’s voice changed, and she knew there was something he had yet to mention.

  “C’mon, Paul. I know there’s more. What aren’t you telling me?”

  “Sydney Whitaker is interested in possibly being your client.”

  Charlotte fell back against the sofa cushions. “The Sydney Whitaker? The star of that TV show everybody talks about?”

  “She’s also the lead in a movie I’ll be producing later this year.”

  Even as her heart pounded an erratic rhythm, Charlotte forced herself to take a mental step back. This sounded too good to be true. “I’ve never met Sydney.”

  “She’s from Wisconsin originally. Not only is she a fan of your work, she likes that the two of you have Midwestern roots in common.”

  “Where in Wisconsin?” she pressed, though it didn’t really matter.

  “Madison. Anyway, the first step is to sign with Leticia, then she’ll work with Sydney’s people.”

  Charlotte’s head spun. This was the dream she’d had since she’d been ten years old. Could it really come true?

  “Charlotte? Are you still there?”

  “I am.” She gave a breathless laugh. “This is amazing. I’m, well, I’m speechless.”

  “It’s a fabulous opportunity. I’ve got your contact information, so with your permission, I’ll give it to Leticia. She’ll be in touch.”

  “Yes, yes, you have my permission.” Charlotte’s hand fluttered against her chest, confirming she was still breathing. “Thank you, Paul.”

  “You’re welcome.” More ice cubes clinked. “It’s not a done deal, but we’re close. Talk soon.”

  Charlotte clicked off the call and dropped the phone to the sofa. It seemed unbelievable. She might have an agent. Not just any agent, but one of the best in the business. And having Sydney Whitaker as her client would open so many doors…

  All her hard work might finally be paying off. Perhaps the move to San Diego hadn’t been foolish after all. Though she tempered her enthusiasm by reminding herself that Paul was known for extravagant promises.

  During the time she’d known him, she’d learned to take his promises with a grain of salt.

  Still, he’d sounded serious. And anyone with even a modicum of business savvy knew that this kind of success in her line of work often required connections.

  That word—connections—brought her back to reality with a jolt.
